Program description
The Cognitive and Behavioural Ecology Program (CABE) is a graduate programme that focuses on animal behaviour and behavioural ecology. It is intended to train students in ecological research that incorporates cognitive and behavioural sciences. Cognition and behaviour are also researched at the molecular, developmental, and evolutionary levels. Faculty from the Departments of Biology, Ocean Sciences, and Psychology, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Environmental Science Program at Grenfell Campus serve as supervisors, as do adjunct faculty from the Canadian Wildlife Service, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Forestry and Wildlife Divisions of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Parks Canada.
The PhD programme consists of courses, a thorough test, and a thesis that can be finished in four years of full-time study.

Typically, doctoral students are not obliged to take any courses. The comprehensive examination is often administered at the end of the first year and consists of an integrative review paper on a Behavioural Ecology topic other than the thesis topic.
The thorough examination committee conducts an oral examination in which questions are asked regarding the paper, the topic, and their relationship to larger fields of animal behavior, behavioural ecology, biology, ecology, and psychology.

Requirements for applicants
- Master’s degree in an appropriate area of study
Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
