Program description

Memorial Archaeology has a growing international reputation based on the range and quality of scholarly research, proficiency in teaching, and cutting-edge infrastructure.

We offer distinct strengths in historical archaeology, archaeological sciences, and the ancient indigenous past for student opportunities. Modern laboratories specialising in applied archaeological sciences, archaeobotany, archaeoentomology, archaeological conservation, prehistoric, historical, and aboriginal archaeology integrate researchers into community-university research initiatives stretching from Northern Labrador and the Arctic to French Guiana and Northwest Europe. We prepare our graduate students to be competent researchers, critical thinkers, and active stewards of our common archaeological heritage as one of the largest Archaeology departments in the country.

The PhD programme consists of coursework, comprehensive tests, a second language exam, a written thesis, and an oral defence. The programme is four years long and can be completed in four years of full-time study.

Program structure

Students will normally be required to successfully complete two (2) courses during their first three semesters in the programme. The required courses are:
- Theory and Method in the Study of Archaeology and Prehistory
- Interpretive Methods in Archaeology

Additional courses at the discretion of the supervisory committee.

All candidates must demonstrate a reading knowledge of a second language to be determined in consultation with the supervisory committee. This language will normally be a language in which there is a substantial body of literature in either Archaeology and/or Anthropology.
The candidate must submit a written thesis proposal for presentation to the department two months following completion of his/her comprehensive examination.
Oral defense of dissertation
Residency: the Department requires a minimum residency of two years for Ph.D. students.

Requirements for applicants

Master’s degree in an appropriate area of study

Applicants who did not complete a baccalaureate or post-graduate degree at a recognized university where English is the primary language of instruction must normally complete either the:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a paper-based score of 580 (or higher), computer-based score of 237 (or higher), or internet-based score of 92-93 (or higher); or
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve a score of 7 (or higher).
